My favorite moments eating out are when the plate is set before me by the server and the fork or spoon or chopsticks are lifted to my mouth; and then, before I can even think about it, before consciousness, like an intuitive reaction, my lips part and the word “Wow” is exhaled.
These moments are very rare for me and I had two such Wows at Oleana last night.
Both are on the current menu and I urge you to go before the menu changes(whenever that is!)
Tuna Kibbeh Nayeh with Turkish Spices, Pickled Onion & Herb Salad $12 is an app of raw tuna combined w/ bulghur, a complex group of Turkish spices,and chopped lovage. Lovage is one of my all time fav herbs, , tasting vaguely of strong celery, but utterly distinct. And almost never used.As in NEVahhhhh. The menu description does not include the attribution, a shame really; in this dish it’s a bit like leaving out basil from the listed ingredients in a traditional pesto. I could eat this every night and not complain.
Azuluna Pork, Crispy Pea Paella, Fried Fiddleheads & Paprika Sauce $24 is a fairly straightforward description for a most complex symphony of flavors. Grilled spice rubbed local pork over a crispy-edged fried paella and topped with a plethora of tempura’d fiddle heads and alot of (thank heavens) the creamy pimenton sauce.
The patio is open for the season, the portions are generally generous and well priced, the staff is friendly and professional, and the restnt is also open Sundays. Like I said.......WOW!
