6/09 Max Downtown, Hartford Ct.: Still Tops After All These Years

While Max Downtown is a polar opposite from its hip, LOUD, more fusion- food sister,Trumbull Kitchen, Max Downtown has the most important things in common with Trumbull- consistently top notch food, w/friendly, warm and efficient service to match. Max has a completely 'yes' kitchen and front of the house. They really want you to be happy and they show that in all areas. If you are lucky enough to have Melinda as your waitress, she will definitely add to your experience, as we saw her do to all the tables around us, as well as ours. I NEVER order steak out because it's never as good as my own, but this 'smoked' prime rib was richly marbled and FULL of deep flavor.Ditto the saffron risotto w/ chorizo and the succulent swordfish with grilled peaches. The truffled shoestring fries really do taste of truffle (a reflection of the high quality of the truffle oil used for drizzling). Portions are generous; food is straightforward with lots of unusual touches. Sauces, aiolis, dressings are all unique , full flavored and really add to the success of the plate.Yumm all the way.
