Was meeting my kids for lunch on the UES and decided to take a nice walk to the 2nd. Avenue Deli on 74th & 1st. It had been a while. We definitely had a craving for some Jewish deli. I am pleased to report that by the end of our little feast we were all quite satisfied, even my sometimes finicky granddaughter. We filled our table: two Matzoh Ball Soups with noodles and carrots; one hot Potato Knish; Frankfurter with mustard & sauerkraut; Twin Double Corned Beef & Pastrami Sandwiches; a big platter of French fries; and two cans of Dr. Browns Cream & Root Beer. There were sides of delectable pickles and coal slaw, mustard, Russian dressing, challah bread, too. We all shared. So happy my little one ate up a storm as we related stories about Jewish delis of the past with her. As a coup de grace, our waiter brought us Egg Cream shots to end the meal. We had enough to bag up as a surprise for my hard working son-in-law. Our waiter was friendly, patient and efficient. Glad we left ourselves a walk back to help digest.
All the while, I was thinking of what Jewish style delis we have left around the city? I know to some Katz's is the motherload. What else? Sarge's?
