It's all in the name

Saturday evening we went to an ethnic restaurant for dinner. A friend made the reservation under his girlfriend's name, which happens to be of the same ethnicity. At 7:30 on Saturday night, the four of us were seated at the best table in the place. A signifcantly better table than the rest. Coincidence?
(we joked that we were seated in the brahman section).

Suppose there's nothing wrong with a little favoritism for one's "brethren," but does this mean that one should employ this to their benefit? If I'm concerned about getting a table at my favorite sushi spot, do I call up and make a reservation under Yamamoto? Would this be wrong? I have friends that make reservations under names that are not their's for the sake of simplicity (i.e. spelling), is that different/ok?
