After a two year hiatus, fellow Austrian chowhound 'Nilescable' and I met up once again at one of our favorite Chinese restaurant - 'Above & Beyond' and resumed our annual mini-chowmeet.....unfortunately this time, with a malfunctioning camera!
Although we heard that their long time executive Chef had left, we still decided to give the restaurant a try in the hope that our favorite appetizer - 'Smoked duck eggs with black truffle' will still be on the menu. Unfortunately, such was not the case due to a new chef coming on board and the menu was revamped. Unfamiliar with the new chef's specialty and forte, we settled for the chef's tasting menu and kept our fingers' crossed.
To our surprise, the food was as good as before. Solidly prepared, most were beautifully plated and the majority tasted wonderful and exquisite. Casing point, the perfectly cooked steamed 'Red star Garoupa' paired with a delicate and delicious pumpkin chicken broth with mini egg drops. The sauteed Wagyu beef with soy marinated goose liver was full of wok-hay aroma and ultra flavorful. The appetizer's abalone chicken pie was another piece of gem. Lastly, the noodle braised in sakura dried shrimp and abalone sauce was so delicious that I have to ask for a spoon to scoop up the sauce! A piece of crusty French baguette might be even better!
Unfortunately, our evening was spoiled by one of the slowest and least attentive service I have ever experienced in a fine restaurant. Under staffed and a packed weekend crowd might be the culprit? Lastly, though I managed to secure a window table way ahead of time, the foggy weather on the night obscured most of the view. Such a pity!
Next morning, we meet up again at Tim Ho Wan for an early Dim Sum brunch. We arrived to find a long line already formed!.....for those to die for freshly baked BBQ pork buns and great Har Gow? Still possessing 'star appeal' after all those years!
Oops! Almost forgot! For us two macho men, our table at Above & Beyond was ornated with a crystal vase containing a couple of 'Pink Roses'!! How romantic! Ha!
