2015 Chinese New Year Menu at Mu Lan, last day March 8th (tomorrow)

I went with 3 friends and we ordered 6 dishes. All these dishes were very reasonably priced except for the $40 soup. 12-18 dollars, like that. The menu is in Chinese only, so I translated it.

Our app was hot smoked fish, served cold. I liked this very much and a deal at 10 bucks. There is another app of tofu, bamboo and lily flower, and the regular cold taiwanese apps are also listed on the CNY menu.

Pork Belly was braised atop a hill of umani soy based tiny hollow bamboo shoots and lily flower. It was very meaty for belly.

Meatballs in a casserole on top of cabbage were very good. The center showed that these were cooked dead spot on. Lighter in flavor than the pork belly.

We got our special soup next, and it came in this very impressive stoneware cauldron. It had spare rib, other cuts of meat, taro, jujube, mushroom, bamboo, quail eggs and some kind of collagen that may have been a faux sharkfin. Kind of medicinal and elegant in flavor, and extremely hot in temp.

One of the favorites was the vegetable dish, stuffed tofu and tofu skin, inside was ginko, taro, bamboo, shitake, surrounded by pak choi and tomato. Again, it is a casserole braising type method, this was likely inverted out onto the dish for presenation.

Finally we had the dessert item, eight delight sticky rice with dried fruits and nuts, with a maraschino type cherry on top. We were pretty stuffed, but it went down without a fight.

We ordered pretty well although in retrospect, we had a lot of dishes that were casserole type braising methods, lot of shitake/lily flower/bamboo shoots. I would probably mix it up with say, the special fish roll with pork that is fried. This is taiwanese but it strongly takes after it's shanghai roots.

Other dishes we did not try, a couple of HK/Canto inspired dishes, like mayo shrimp with pineapple, HK beef with snow pea and onion, half fresh unfrozen chicken with wood ear, lily flower, bamboo. Honey spare ribs, an interesting HOT jelly fish dish, seabass any way you want it, and yeah, that's the whole menu.
