2014 in the kitchen: What were the best new things you made?

For years I wondered how to make this specialty of my hometown. After a childhood friend said if anyone could do it, it would be me, I made my own. AND IT WAS FREAKIN' AWESOME. Finally mastering this is probably my proudest kitchen achievement of the year. Or maybe ever.

I was pleasantly surprised to make a pizza that brought me straight down Memory Lane to the kitchen in my uncle's restaurant.

Inspired by "Chef," I learned to make mojo, then Cubanos. Really fun!

Another Memory Lane excursion. This time, to a soup I sampled 20 years ago in West Palm Beach. A kind poster here shared a link to the recipe from the 391st Bomb Group, where I tried it first.

And not to skip dessert, CARROT CAKE with raisins soaked in Maker's Mark and PEANUT BUTTER SWIRL BROWNIES were my two sweetness standouts.
