Past 20 years--D.C. food scene changes

Am a native Washingtonian who's been living in San Francisco the past 20 years. The family is heading back for a short trip, two youngsters in tow, and we're wondering what we might find in D.C. that wouldn't be available in S.F.

I remember the city as being a particularly stultified restaurant town. The most adventurous places in the city at the time were Nora and Paladin's Watergate place. Firm in my memory were the acres of Palm-style steak houses, Sans Souci, Krupin's. Heavy on the "decor" and not so concerned with what got on the plate. Better then to look for the Caribbean, Cuban, southern, hoagies, Vietnamese.
