To soothe my sadness at having to miss the North Shore Clam Crawl, I decide that I "needed" a clam roll on Sunday...went to Clem and Ursies and had a great one..big bellies..fried perfectly..girlfriend had an excellent lobster roll..cold with mayo. I enjoyed my clam roll so much, and was pissed at myself for not ordering the larger platter, that I had another clam roll. Interestingly, the quality of the clams was the same as the first, but the frying was not done nearly as well...go figure.. I like Clem and Ursies a lot but I always have the same reaction when I leave...boy that was expensive for a clam shack..$70+ for 2...the clam rolls were $11 each and the lobster was $12...but the sides (all very good..real fries)add up...and the raw bar is very tempting while waiting.
Based on some comments here, I decided to try Tips'n Tops (?). I've been by the place many times and always see a line out front. I would describe the place as feeling like you're going into a Cape Cod restaurant 30 years ago...and I mean that in a positive way. Friendly, helpful staff..good food, well prepared. We had been bike riding for a few hours and were real thirsty...after seeing us drain our glasses, the waitress brought us a full water pitcher. After getting a good rundown of the various Portuguese specialties, I ordered a kale soup and a roasted pork over rice..gfriend had a broiled haddock and clam cake. Everything was great..pork had a tender consistency with a little crunch to it..almost like a Mexican carnitas dish...great meal at 1/2 the price of Clem and Ursies..
