In the Boston area, we have a fairly large Indian population, drawn to Boston by the Hi tech firms. Almost all the Indian restaurants in our area and the rest of new england , have near identical menus. Punjab punjab punjab.
The small subset of southern indian restaurants- also have near identical (to themselves) menus.many people from gujjarat(sp.). the most unusual item i have found on any of these so. indian menushas been the colocasia leaves, tightly rolled up w/ coconut , coated w/besan flour ,and deepfried.
Years ago, there was a wonderful and VERY unusual restaurant, Annapurna, run by an Udipi chef/family in Worcester, 1 hour west of boston.
It was like eating in someone's home- many many unusual dishes.
but no more, sigh......
Given all this background info., have any SF CHs found any truly unusual items on southern indian menus in this area? 'Unusual' in the same way that fermented tea leaf
salad is on the Burma Superstar menu?
