To foodie fans of Fantasy Eatery who reside north of the GTA....Rejoice! Their Scarborough flag ship restaurant has recently relocated up north to Richmond Hill! ( Unit16, 10909 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill. Tel: 905 787 0388 - next to TD Bank ).
Our party of four braved the snowy weather and gave this 'wok-hay' specialist a try tonight. Opened only a couple of weeks ago, they are still operating in 'soft opening' mode. We arrived at 6.30 pm with only a couple of covers present. By the time our entrees arrived at our table half an hour later, the place was packed!! A pretty good indicator about the restaurant's overall food and service offering!
This brand new bright and cozy place is much more refined and clean than their aged Scarborough premise. Menu choices had been reduced with more sophisticated selection added. Pricing was a bit elevated due to may be the more prestigious locale?
We had the following dishes:
- Shang Tong poached Empress Free Range Chicken
- 'Ice-Quake' Sweet and Sour Pork
- Wok Fried Veal ribs with honey Teriyaki glaze
- Pea shoot with Goji Berries in Chicken broth
- Complimentary dessert of Papaya and snow fungus soup.
Overall quality of the food ranges from good to excellent.
The stand out dish undoubtedly goes to the uniquely presented Sweet and Sour Pork. Placed in a huge glass bowl, the already crispy pork was put on top of a bed of ice cubes and further topped with more ice cubes. The severe temperature differential ( not unlike the principle used in Chinese Toffee apples by dunking the hot morsels into a bowl of ice water to create the crispy hardened shell ) created a highly crisped battered shell for the pork morsels. Great textural feel!
The veal ribs were another success. Nicely caramelized, crisp, aromatic and tasty. Standard was the same if not better than the Scarborough version.
Both the Chicken and vegetable dishes though did not attain stand out stature, were nicely prepared.
Dessert was a touch on the sweet side. But who's complaining? After-all, they were complimentary!
10% discount are being offered during this soft opening period. Overall bill with tax came to $56 only!! Not bad! Not bad at all!
I will definitely return to try out more of their house specials!
