As American as German Chocolate Cake

While totally nontraditional, some people—and especially professional bakeries—like to cover the sides of German Chocolate Cake with chocolate ganache or buttercream frosting. It does look more buttoned-up and adds even more rich flavor (some say too much and believe it overpowers the other components), but there's something charming about the striped look of the exposed layers of the original. Better try it both ways to figure out which one you prefer!
