Pumpkin pie is a no-brainer for Thanksgiving, and you can make pumpkin bread all year long, but there are many interesting ways to use pumpkin purée in everything from breakfast to confections.

Start your day by adding the purée to oatmeal, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese, along with the sweetener of your choice and a dash of pumpkin pie spice, if you want a bit more pizzazz. Or blend it into a smoothie. It also makes a great addition to pancake and waffle batter, hounds say.

Pumpkin works well in savory dishes, too. Add it to risotto or mashed potatoes for a delicious side, or let it become the star of a main dish, such as a turkey, white bean, and pumpkin chili, which jujuthomas calls “awesome.”

Instead of baked goods for dessert, do something more unusual by using the purée in pumpkin fudge, or in caramels flavored with maple syrup.
