Fresh figs are a seasonal pleasure that works equally well in savory and sweet dishes, enhancing every course in a meal.
Figs make spectacular appetizers with little effort. Brush on a bit of honey, add a grind of black pepper, and grill, suggests magiesmom. Or split them in half, fill with goat cheese, and roll in crushed pistachios to make dragonchowmein's fave hors d'oeuvre. Alternately, stuff them with goat cheese, walnuts, and slivered prosciutto, then broil. "I could make a meal of those," says escondido123.
If you should need a main course, figs marry well with poultry and pork. CHOW's Chicken with Goat Cheese and Figs is delicious, says drongo, and BananaBirkLarsen swears by chicken baked with figs, rosemary, onions, and whole garlic cloves. Or try this recipe for pork chops in a fig, wine, and chipotle sauce, which "sounds a bit weird but is so good," says shanagain.
Round out your repast with a fresh fig cake that includes the chopped fruit in the batter, as well as in a cooked filling spread between the cake layers.
