A self-described macaron addict, js76wisco knows a thing or two about the French confection. "We try them everywhere we go and constantly seek out the best ones," js76wisco says. "Some of the best ones we've had are from Bouchon, Miette, Payard, La Provence, Ladurée, etc. ... We've tried many of what people consider to be the best in the world. I'm here to tell you that the best macaron we've ever had is in a small store front in downtown Brea."
The place is Merely Sweets, run by two CIA grads. The salted caramel, chocolate, and pistachio macarons are best of breed, says js76wisco, and the "size, texture, quality of ingredients, consistency and flavor make these macarons the worst thing that has happened to my waistline in years."
The chocolate macaron has a rich, dark flavor and an "interesting brownie like consistency with an almost ganache like filling" that js76wisco says is "divine." The salted caramel macaron achieves a nice balance of sweet and salty, and it actually has caramel in the center. But don't miss the pistachio, which is js76wisco's favorite: "It tastes like somebody took the Bulgarini Gelato pistachio gelato and made a macaron out of it."
Merely Sweets isn't just a one-hit wonder. Also exceptional is Merry Berry, a three-layered cake with cream filling and berries. "This is the best slice of cake I've ever had in my life, bar none," says js76wisco. "The frosting is light and seductive, the cake is moist, and it's just wonderful."
