For a goodly while, the San Gabriel Valley has utterly dominated the dim sum scene, leaving only a few sad old war hounds in Chinatown. But according to Clinton, things may have changed. Golden Dragon is now a good rival to the San Gabriel pushcart stalwarts.

Golden Dragon bottomed out in the early 2000s, but really turned things around in 2005-2006, says Chandavkl.

The restaurant is pretty crowded even on a weekday, with busy pushcarts and a selection that’s impressive for Chinatown, says Clinton. There’s succulent char siu and roast duck. The sugarcane shrimp is nice and crispy. The whole shebang is at least the equal of, and probably better than, Empress Pavilion.
