The sandwich is the thing at Macellato, as you might guess from its full name: Macellato—The Sandwich. There are two, actually, the Italiano (Fra’Mani salami, capocolla, and mortadella with provolone with a lemony cabbage-fennel coleslaw) and the gallina (Fulton Farms fried chicken breast with the same slaw). While the Italiano may be a traveler, the gallina is not—the chicken is juicy and moist, but it just doesn’t stay crisp for long, especially with the dose of hot sauce they give it. Still, mariacarmen deems it quite tasty, the FiDi equivalent of Bakesale Betty’s beloved fried chicken sandwich.
Sandwiches are about $9 with tax, cash only. When mariacarmen stopped in, the owner was frying the chicken while his son took orders and assembled sandwiches.
