Having spent time with Dave McLean in the weeks leading up to Slow Food Nation, I expected that I would know most of the beers he poured at the event in the Beer Pavilion. But my favorite of the day was one I had never tried before, MateVeza, an organic pale ale brewed with yerba mate. I couldn’t exactly taste the tea, but the beer was light and fruity—very easy to drink on a summer afternoon. And though the brewer didn’t warn me that one pint contains about the same amount of caffeine as a half cup of coffee, I did notice a spring in my step as I energetically went on to drink a lot more that day, in both the Beer Pavilion and the Spirits Pavilion.

MateVeza, $4.79 for a 22-ounce bottle
