The lengths to which some people will go for a cold beer are simply astounding. Case in point: This exceedingly detailed account in the “Incredible Stuff I Made” section of, which describes how to build a cooler for a six-pack using a block of solid ice.

The advantages: looks cool. Feels cool. Keeps beer cold for, well, here’s the official word:

“Tests show that the block will hold the bottles for more than three hours when placed outside on a 72-85 degree day, however a steady runoff will flow after about 40 minutes.” There’s also a fairly solid theory floating around that the cooler will in fact float in a swimming pool.
