Depending on your tax bracket the announcement of S. Pelligrino’s annual list of the Top 50 Restaurants functions either as a to-do list or—as in my case—an excuse to daydream for a few measly minutes while I meander towards my favorite $12 ramen spot. The prestigious annual list includes some of the most high-powered chefs and restaurant teams in the world, and many (most) of these nearly-perfect restaurants carry corresponding price tags.

This year Mirazur, a stunning rotunda restaurant perched on hillside cliff in the French coastal town of  Menton, took the top spot while multiple-time winner Noma (Copenhagen) returns to the list at #2 after having closed for a refresh and renovation.

Gaggan (Bangkok) was the lone Asian restaurant in the top 10 at #4, while Cosme (NYC), which placed 23rd on the list, was the lone U.S. restaurant to crack the top 25 with Le Bernardin (NYC), Blue Hill at Stone Barns (upstate New York), Alinea (Chi) Atelier Crenn (SF) and Benu (SF) among the others to place. Twins Garden in Moscow pulls ranks as the highest new entry on the list while Pujol in Mexico City earns the best of North America at #12.

Other notable awards went to chef, restauranteur, activist and humanitarian, José Andrés, for his continuous aid in fighting the global hunger crisis, and New York’s own Daniela Soto-Innes (Cosme) who won Best Female Chef of 2019.
