Kura has no sign and no menu—just the way some Chowhounds like their Japanese restaurants. They also like the omakase-only sushi and cooked dishes at this East Village hideaway (pictured), including toro, monkfish liver, and squid wrapped around eel and rice.
Tribeca has its own newish Japanese retreat, Shigure, a sake and shochu bar affiliated with jazz hangout B Flat downstairs. Drink-friendly bites include grilled duck; yam with smoked saba; and off-menu ramen in broth goosed with duck fat.
