Some Angelenos wake up to egg-white omelets and kale smoothies; others reach for churros with chocolate sauce or champurrado. Here are four places in the LA area where Chowhounds reach for sugar-charged option number two.
• Churros Calientes‘ churros con chocolate (pictured) are like the ones you find on the streets of Madrid, says J.L. The piping-hot chocolate has “the consistency more of a rich chocolate pudding than of hot cocoa.”
11521 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles; 424-248-3890
• Taco Rosa (locations in Newport Beach and Irvine) serves Mexico City–style churros coloniales, sprinkled with cinnamon and piloncillo, with a thick chocolate sauce for dipping.
2632 San Miguel Drive, Newport Beach; 949-720-0980
13792 Jamboree Road, Irvine; 714-505-6080
• Salinas Churros Truck used to park in Echo Park, but now you’re likely to find it in Pasadena. Three bucks buys a bag of five fresh churros covered in jam and condensed milk.
4910 Huntington Drive, Pasadena; no phone available
• On quaint Olvera Street in downtown LA, Mr. Churro fries them up fresh. Grab a plain churro, or have it stuffed with caramel, cream, strawberry, or chocolate. Don’t forget to order champurrado for dipping!
E-12 Olvera Street, Los Angeles; 213-680-9036
