Yanagi Bistro‘s new branch brings to Lomita the kind of Asian-fusion flair of some trendy Hollywood restaurant, DrBruin says. Take, for instance, the Yanagi Caesar: a quality romaine wedge with pear tomatoes, a panko-fried poached egg, prosciutto, and crispy rice croutons. Yanagi is an anomaly in the relatively conservative South Bay Japanese restaurant scene.

Food presentation is uniformly, stunningly beautiful, DrBruin says, though overall success varies from dish to dish. For example, seared scallop risotto came with perfectly cooked scallops and rice, but was a touch oversweet and undersalted. But braised Angus short rib was perfect, from the gorgeous presentation to the slightly spicy gochujang chile sauce. “This block of short rib was… chopstick ten….fork ten….just meltingly tender,” DrBruin says.
