If there’s a better piece of meat around town than the burnt brisket end at John Brown Smokehouse, SpiceJunkies doesn’t know about it. “Like meat candy,” he says. “This is some kick butt BBQ that has a rustic flavor that I find absent from other NYC BBQ I’ve had.”

This Kansas City–style barbecue house in Queens, open since summer, also makes top-notch pulled pork that jonross ranks among the city’s best. And its house-cured pastrami is “out of this world awesomeness,” he adds. jerseyguy2000, who likes the pork belly and peppery pork spareribs, recommends the three-meat platter, a relative deal at $17: “Barbecue is never going to be low-priced in NYC, but this is certainly a bargain, as the massive size ranked among the largest platters I’ve encountered in the genre.”

John Brown is off the beaten path in a quiet corner of Long Island City, but that’s not keeping ‘cue hounds away. “If you like BBQ and live in Astoria/LIC/Sunnyside/Woodside etc.,” says MarcInSunnysideGardens, “this place is well worth your support.”
