Finally made it to Z&Y ( former Sam Lok ) to try the Yunnan food, I've never had Yunnan food before, only read about it in one of those Chinese Kung Fu novels and I was really curious to try the "Cross the bridge" noodles.
We ordered the "house special rice noodles" ( #1 from the special menu under the glass table top ). I like the light broth and think it is savory. Here's the link to an earlier posting from Melanie Wong ( which is how I came to learn about Z&Y ).

What's worth mentioning this time is the "pork stew noodle soup" ( #2 on the house special menu ) -- a pleasant surprise. We didn't know what to expect and it turns out that the broth tastes really similar to the Taiwanese beef noodle soup ( e.g. from A&J in Cupertino ) that I've been looking for in the city. They must use similar combination of Chinese spices, chili, and pepper. The little cubes of fatty pork stew on top of the noodle soup are very tasty but not spicy, so they must have made the spicy soup base seperately. It was spicier than A&J and the soup is thicker too ( sometimes I think A&J soup is too thin ). This is a great find. I wonder if they use the same soup base for all the other spicy soup noodles on the house special menu. Later I notice there's also "beef noodle soup" on the house special menu ( #6? ) and I will definitely give it a try next time.
