I went to Zaytoons for the first time with a group last night; we were looking for cheap eats close to Union & Nevins, where we had an event. I had the shawarma platter. I love good shawarma, so if available it's the first thing I'll try at a casual Middle Eastern place. Theirs was made with beef & lamb. It was dry & tasteless. The babaghanough was pasty, gummy, overly sweet, and tasted of tahini, but I could hardly taste the eggplant, and it certainly didn't have the smoky eggplant flavor of good babaghanough. The fresh baked pita was awful too -- dense, leaden & tasteless--worlds away from the light pita they make at Olive Vine in the slope.
The platter cost about $9.50 and it was enormous. Sometimes a lot of food for little money is no bargain.
