Yuzu - a new modern japanese rest. in the marina

kimchee | Dec 22, 200506:13 PM

After picking up a few gifts on Union St. in SF, my husband was craving asian food so we stopped in for dinner at a place called Yuzu. (Yuzu is a japanese citrus fruit). The waitress said they'd been open 7 weeks. A small-mid sized place with modern, simple decor. They had some loungey-music on (slow global DJ mixes). They have a sushi bar that seats about 12 and maybe 10-15 tables. Overall everything was good.

-Started with seaweed sald with miso dressing ($6). It was overdressed but OK. The miso taste was not predominate. Was tempted to try the edamame with garlic and chilis.

-Had a roll with avocado, eel, and snow crab ($10). Again, a little too much sauce on top but tasty.

-Tuna tartare tower with wasabi wonton chips and greens. Large, tall portion of spicy tuna in a wasabi wonton boat that looked like a clam shell. More wonton chips scattered about and a mixed green with a japanese citrus dressing. The wontons were good to munch on - a little greasy but wasabi flavor was evident. Mixed greens and citrus based dressing were refreshing.

-4 jumbo shrimp with 3 kinds of japanese mushrooms (enoki + 2 others) ($11). This was my favorite dish. The shrimp were nice-sized and cooked (roasted? sauteed?) perfectly. Again this was covered in a citrus/asian vinaigrette (but different than the previous dressing) and served over frisee and mizuna I think.

-each had a side of wasabi mashed potatoes ($3). YUM! I could've had 2 more of these to myself. They also offer spicy mashed sweet potatoes I think.

-my husband enjoyed his extra-large Hitachino Nest Beer (amber with fruit undertones) ($11) - the beer with the cute owl logo. They also have one from this brand that is like a Hefeweissen. I had a nice nigori sake ($6 for a small glass) which was brought in a traditional wooden box (but no overflow). This was followed by a great soju drink - no hard liquor there - involving soju, housemade ginger syrup, and lemon. Delicious and not too sweet. Other soju cocktails sounded great as well (involving pomegranate, grapefruit, cucumber, etc...).

Total was $79 before tip.

They had toro and blue-fin tuna on special, and many other raw offerings. Service was pleasant and friendly. Only about 4 other tables of diners around 8:00. Overall a nice dinner, but nothing exceptional (especially since I'm never usually in that area). I'd say it's similar to Grasshopper in Oakland. Sushi 'n more in a nice space.

on Fillmore bet. Lombard & Chestnut in the Marina area (a few streets from Union)
