It's rare I go out for a meal and find every dish on the table to be crave-able. It happened last night at Yummy Mammy. I'd been once before and thought it was very good indeed, but this meal was outstanding. Already plotting to go back!
Dishes we had:
B05 twist cooked spicy chicken, which I think is a version of 1000 chile chicken with not so many chiles. I've only had it once before at Spicy Beauty, where it was mediocre at best. Here it was stellar, with some good Sichuan peppercorn tingle, spot on seasoning and flavourful chicken.
C01 Miaoling sour fish soup, a perfect dish for a drizzly night, massive and full of interesting bits and bobs (lily bulbs, anyone?). Unusual lemongrass flavour, enticing/addicting sourness. I didn't detect much of the fermented tomatoes but definite umami action here. I didn't care for the fish much but it didn't matter a whit -- I'd pay $22.95 for just the broth.
E07 shredded pork with vegetable, which sounds like the most boring dish ever but is in fact a delightful flavour bomb of thinly sliced fatty pork in a savoury sauce with loads of very hot sliced green peppers, stir fried to perfection. More please.
E12 steamed spareribs with rice powder, a dish that I am a huge fan of and have had here once before and loved. It was even better this time, with a hint of spicy heat and excellently balanced seasoning. Vied for top dish of the night which is saying a lot.
G11 green bean with pickled vegetables, another tame sounding dish that kills it, actually a platter of mysteriously crispy yet tender fava beans (!) that blew most everyone away. I can't imagine the labour involved to get these puppies shelled. And the pickles were a perfect counterpoint. At least one diner picked this as top dish of the night, and it was up there for me too.
H01 house special spicy noodle with spinach sauce is a sneaky one, as in fact the spinach is IN the noodles, which are green. This dish is served cold and was a refreshing complement to the rest of our order. There are crunchy soya beans, chunks of pickled cabbage, beans sprouts and other tasty things swimming in a lovely dark sauce that I can't quite dissect. Fabulous and more than one diner's top choice on the night.
We were all nicely full for a whopping $92 for six people before tip. We had a reservation but alas didn't need it, though one diner commented that the room is typically fuller in the evening, so it may have been crap-weather related. Here are pix of the stuff we ordered; sorry about the blurry chicken but I couldn't wait to dig in :-).
Next time we'll be ordering A10 fern root salad and B03 Xinjiang hot chicken with noodle, both of which landed on the table next to us and looked most intriguing. I also have my eye on H11 Mammy special taste rice. In fact I think you'd be reasonably safe picking somewhat at random. The woman in the kitchen knows what she is doing.
