YUBU by The Shota | Financial District – San Francisco

Melanie Wong | Apr 30, 202102:06 AM

Friday, April 30, is the final day for YUBU by The Shota lunch and dinner donburi and inari sets for take-out and delivery. The high-end omakase restaurant will be returning to indoor dining.

In September I picked up dinner to share with two friends on their city balcony. With the Financial District deserted, parking right at the door at 5:45pm was simple. I had a 20-minute wait for my food though beyond the appointed time, but that was fine with me, as it meant everything would be prepared fresh. The stylish packaging and elegant presentation that our Japanese restaurants have designed for their to-go meals lead one to expect a special repast.

YUBU Inari Set, $28: 4 pieces of inari sushi - Lean fatty tuna, Crab with tobiko, Crispy Shrimp, Mushroom.
The inari sushi (rice-stuffed tofu pouches) turned out to be more substantial than anticipated. Of the four types, the shrimp topper had a little too much spicy heat, but that’s a minor nit. Otherwise, I could not pick a favorite. The sushi rice was amped up in seasoning giving the inari a bolder personality than the donburi. I enjoyed the inari, especially for the price, though the amount of mayonnaise bumped up against the limits of my tolerance level. For those who prefer a lot of saucing on their sushi rolls, these would be the ticket.

Takara “Treasure Box”, $89: Sea urchin, negi toro, fresh water eel, house-marinated salmon roe, a bed of special sushi rice. Served with toasted seaweed sheets and red miso soup.
The Treasure Box was even more special. Such a luxury to have this high quality in each element and as much of each as anyone wanted. Not often can I say I had my fill of toro. The uni was particularly sweet and just popped that day. The vegetable garnishes --- daikon points, minced chives, tiny mushrooms, crisp snow peas --- lightened the taste and freshened up the presentation. And, fresh wasabi, that my companions tasted and marveled at for the first time.

Serving temperature stayed just right sitting outside on one of those rare Indian summer nights with temperatures still in the 70s after dark. These family-size servings were easy to share. We cut the inari into halves, and the donburi could be scooped onto an individual plate and wrapped in nori. The notably complex red miso soup reheated at home was all mine. Two orders of the Inari set and one Treasure box along with two composed salads plus dessert made by my hosts was more than enough to feed three. In fact I had some of the donburi to take home with me for a rather decadent breakfast.

The Shota had opened a little more than year before the start of shelter-in-place. I had not heard of it yet. Now having sampled this level of execution and customer service, I’m game to reserve one of the 20 seats for the full dine-in experience. I’m sorry that I won’t be able to order these to-go meals one final time today.
