XLB @ Shanghai, Oakland

On a cold and windy day last month, I was shopping on Webster in Oakland's Chinatown and found myself in front of chow fave, Shanghai Restaurant. I'd not been here before, so popped in for a snack of xiao long bao. If I'd been hungrier, I'm sure I would have picked something from the extensive list of cold dishes too.

The XLB took a long time to come, a good thing and an indication that they were probably made to order. None of them were leakers. I liked the texture of the meat, the few drops of tasty juices, and the flavor of the filling was pretty much spot on. The wrappers were a bit thicker than other versions around here, but that's the trade-off for having none of them spring a leak.

I still think China First in Milpitas has the best ones on that side of the bay. However, Oakland is closer to me and on one of my usual routes, and I'd happily eat Shanghai's version any day.
