After seeing a brief mention earlier on this board, I decided to try Xing Long on Essex St. It's a no-nonsense Chinese takeout place with no decor. I was hoping for at least slightly above average suburban Chinese, but was disappointed. Had the Dragon and Phoenix (a combination of General Tso's chicken and hot and spicy shrimp) and Ta Chien Chicken. The General Tso's chicken was pretty decent, with moist pieces of chicken in a tasty, slightly spicy sauce. The Ta Chien chicken turned out to be pretty similar with chicken in a savory and slightly sweet sauce with overcooked vegetables. (Nothing interesting...just the typical carrots, broccoli, etc.) The shrimp turned out to be decently sized shrimp in a nearly inedible sweet and sour sauce...thick, overly sweet, and nearly flourescent red. All in all, not an experience I'm longing to repeat.
So, the question is, did I just order the wrong dishes there, or should I write off Xing Long as being typical uninspired suburban Chinese fast food?
