Something wrong with Gus's BBQ?

Hey all -- Recently returned to Pasadena as a grown-up, I can eat wherever I want. Am terribly tempted to live on a steady diet of Pie'N Burger, In'N out, Burrito Express, Roscoe's, but am trying to expand my horizons by trying a new (to me) restaurant each week.

I just tried Gus's BBQ on Fair Oaks in South Pasadena, because I had heard good things about it and it kept turning up on these "Best of" lists.

It was dreadful. I mean just terrible, worse than your awful mother-in-law's-still-eat-it-to-be-polite- boiled ham. Did something change at Gus's recently? Has it always been this bad? Did we just pick the wrong dishes to try?

We tried: BBQ chicken (terrible sauce, undercooked), ribs (overcooked, tasted more like leftover chinese spareribs), beans (from a can), coleslaw (passable) and bread (stale). Everything was served lukewarm.

Please advise.
