Mission Bar and Grill -- $9, 1/2 lb, cooked medium rare as ordered with a lovely outer char, lots of nice toppings (pick two: I did mushrooms and grilled onions), a good roll, pretty good fries. Amazing transformation of the old Choppin' Block space (though I know that's a sore subject). If I call this place "The Mission" sometimes instead of just Mission, it's because that's what it says over the entrance.
Caffe Umbra -- $12, 1/2 lb of Black Angus, also perfectly cooked and charred, some high-end cheese I forget, good roll, wonderful skinny frites, fig mayo on the side. I think I like this better than Union's excellent version (with andouille mixed in) down the block. This seems like a nice nod to neighborhood diners who want to sit at the bar and not drop $30 on a weeknight. They've also extended their dining hours till later in the evening (11pm Tu-W, midnight Th-Sa), and restarted Sunday brunch.
