I made 'Cephalonian salt cod pie' today and I was cleaning the soaked cod as usual...then I noticed there was something wrong. I looked closer and found that there were some brownish worms in the cod's flesh. I was disgusted, but I had all the other ingredients ready; I told myself "There are worms and insects in vegetable too" and started cutting the cod into small pieces, holding it through the light to see if there are more worms hidden in the flesh. I ended up throwing away quite a lot as some pieces were teeming with the stuff.
I've read and heard a lot about parasites in fish, but it was my first time seeing any. Is it very common for the cod to have parasites, or was I just unlucky?
