Worms in blackberries

I've been buying blackberries for a long time but this is a new one to me. I bought some at the farmers market on Friday. Transferred them into my own container - didn't see any worms. Stored in fridge. ate some for breakfast yesterday - didn't see any worms. Took them out this morning - small white maggot-like worms crawling on many of them. I picked out all the visibly wormy ones. washed the others, cut them up to check for hidden worms, didn't see anything, went ahead and ate them. Meanwhile I had left the wormy ones in a plastic produce bag to take out with the trash tonight. Curiosity just got the best of me, and I looked inside. No worms. Not crawling on any of them, and not inside the 4 or 5 that I cut open as I tried to figure out where the worms went. And no recently hatched fruit flies or similar swarming around. So does anyone know (a) what these worms were, (b) where they went, (c) any way to avoid them, and/or (d) have I been eating them unknowingly for years?
