Wonmi Korean

Windy | May 3, 200407:40 PM

ChowFun, Jen Maiser, and I had lunch at Wonmi Korean BBQ, on Fillmore near Geary, next door to Mozzerella di Bufala. I had been there once before and really liked their bi bim bap, a bowl of Korean comfort food: rice, spinach, sprouts, carrots, and beef, topped by a fried egg.

We ordered the galbi (short ribs) lunch special, bi bim bap, and a bowl of hand cut noodles in vegetable soup.

The pickles were below average, and far below my current favorite, Chick N Deli. The entrees were served with a sour seaweed soup, which was flavorful but bitter.

Galbi was excellent. Tender and flavorful. Bi Bim Bap was quite good, if a smaller portion than I remembered. The soup was completely bland, with a bit of cucumber and seaweed the only vegetables.

Service was friendly but confused. The server didn't seem to understand we wanted to share and it took several tries for her to bring us extra plates and bowls.

Not a bad choice if you're going to the Kabuki or looking for bi bim bap, but not the spot for anyone craving kim chee.

Has anyone tried the Thai place on the corner for their $5.50 weekday combo lunch?

We then walked over to Japantown and surveyed various dessert options, settling on the new crepe place next to May's Coffee Shop, which was good but expensive ($4 for a crepe with bananas, chocolate, and whipped creme).
