Wonderful panini

The food stalls in Paris are famous for hot off the griddle crepes and less so for panini, the nearly two-dimensional sandwich pressed to a crisp that runs wildly with melted cheese and delicious prosciutto when bitten into. It is a mid winter pleasure, simple and cheap.
I am glad to report that a more than respectible facsimile can be had in San Jose. Adjacent to Zanotto's supermarket on Bascom and Naglee (right behind Valley Fair shopping center), a small Italian specialty market, called di Tavolo, offers a variety of gourmet sandwiches that are best pressed under the industrial strenght sandwich griddle for a few minutes.
My favorite is the tomato, basil, mozzarella and prosciutto on an Acme herb slab. Ask the server to toast it very well done. This heats the ingrediants sufficiently allowing the flavors to comingle. A hearty sandwich runs about $4-5.
