went to wolfgang's last night for dinner before the allman brother's show at the beacon. all in all, it was good, not great, and there are much better steakhouses in manhattan.
arrived 15 minutes late for a 5:30 seating. hostess reminded us we were late and then sat us at one of the many many open tables near the back close to the bar. on a side note, the bar looks really nice. i like the low, tiled ceiling. you can also order off the full menu at the bar. it was funny seeing people eat steak for two at the bar, but i digress.
anyway, started off with the tomato/onion appetizer. i liked that we were offered a dressing as oppose to just the sauce you get at peter lugar's. the tomatoes were huge and tasty but the onion was very strong, not sweet at all. it gave me heartburn.
for dinner we had the porterhouse for two, medium rare, with steamed broccoli and the house-made potato chips. the steamed broccoli was very good. stalks nice and crisp and the head had a nice salty flavor. the potato chips were incredible. really delicious.
as for the steak, it was ok, not great, definitely not lugar's. nicely cooked but it's not as trimmed as the lugar's steak.
it was a good meal, nothing extraordinary. for 2 cabernet's, tomato/onion appetizer, steak for two, broccoli, chips and 2 coffees, it came to about $140 without tip.
the moral of the story: i'd go back to have a drink at the bar and eat a basket of those chips while i did so. i prefer the steaks at striphouse, keens, and spark's much more.
