Wing Shoon - ok, but a bit of a trek

Lau | May 16, 200802:08 PM

So I made the trek down east bway in some pretty damn crappy weather to Wing Shoon, I went specifically to go try their cha siu bao and coconut bun.

Its kind of an interesting place, its way off of the beaten path, you go east on east bway past all the fujian stuff, all the way to the corner of rutgers and east bway and there is Wing Shoon. Its totally cantonese and fyi their english is pretty bad...definitely helps to be able to speak some chinese.

The front of the restaurant is a take out section with hanging bbq meats and take out dim sum. The back of the restaurant is a banquet style hall with about 15 tables. I went there for lunch and they were serving dim sum as well with carts, but its almost menu ordering style b/c its not that big a restaurant and they have a menu with all of the standard dim sum items and i ordered everything from the waitress not the dim sum lady. The clientele was 100% chinese with the exception of one white dude who was with a chinese friend. It was 80% full.

Since it was just me, I ordered a few things:
- Baked cha siu bao - nothing special, pretty big, but the bread wasn't that great and the filling was ok, but i found the cha siu itself a little tough, not tough on an absolute basis, but tougher than it should be
- Steamed cha siu bao - this was better than the baked cha siu bao. Its actually fairly similar to the Mee Sum cha siu bao in size and general flavor, but the ratio of filling / bread is a bit better. That said I thought Mee Sum's bread was slightly more moist and I think the filling is better at Mee Sum as the cha siu had the same issue of being a little on the rough side also I think its a little too sweet here
- Coconut bun - they ran out!! i was so pissed about that b/c i treked all the way over ther in some crappy weather, but will have to try another time
- Soy sauce chicken over rice - pretty mediocre, the chicken was too try and overly salty. Any of the decent cantonese bbq places in ctown do a much better job

All and all it was ok, but nothing special. I feel like there might be something worth ordering (maybe dinner? or dim sum?) b/c it was packed and the clientele is almost solely chinese. I'll go back one more time to try a coconut bun and maybe try dinner. If anyone else has been here and knows whats good please let me know
