Why do wines all taste the same to me?

Hi Everyone,

I really love this message board. I've learned so much, I only wish I had more to contribute.
Over the last couple years, I've been attempting to further my knowledge of wine. I've purchased a few books which I refer to from time to time. However, I must admit that a lot of the different wines I've tried seemed to taste about the same. Except for one which just tasted plain awful and another which was way too dry for my taste, I just can't seem to detect all the different flavors and characteristics each wine is supposed to have according to the label. Most of my wine is purchased at Costco or Trader Joes in the $10 or so range. Should I try more expensive bottles? Each new wine I try I do the proper tasting technique as described in my books (swirling the wine around to all parts of the tongue) but I just can't tell the difference between the different grapes or the different vinyards which will produce different tasting wines of the same grape. It really all tastes the same to me. Do I have faulty taste buds? Is my sense of smell bad? Any advice? Thanks for any replies.
Kind Regards,
