Wine Crier

Rien | Mar 16, 200402:48 PM

I just swung by Dirk's on Clybourn to pick up some fish and noticed that the Wine Crier has closed. I hadn't been there in a while, but I always liked the store and appreciated their enthusiasm and small but well chosen selection. Of course, the tastes were always welcomed. The intimacy and calm was a nice counterpoint to the cacophony of nearby Sams. It was also nice to grab a bottle amd fish in one swoop.

I imagine being so close to Sams took a toll on a business with their model. Similar to Taste and Kafka, they weren't really a destination store, so they might have done better in an area with more foot traffic. That said, does anyone know what's become of the owners, the inventory, etc? Are there plans for relocation? Retirement? A different venture or profession?
