Why is the inside of white peach brown?

I bought some white peaches from Chinatown last weekend. The outside is still firm but when I bite into them, the inside is all brown, kind of like an apple left out in the air. It tastes okay, still crunchy. I don't think this happens with peachs bought in regular supermarkets. Any idea why they do that? And is it safe to eat? I guess that last question is probably too late, I ate it anyways :P
