White Things on Dried Split Peas

valia | Mar 7, 201601:01 PM

I am in the process of cooking split pea soup (did not soak the peas first, but rinsed them), and I noticed that there are white things on a lot of the peas. They are mostly on one of the edges of the peas and I guess they are sprouts or roots. Are these split peas ok to eat or should I throw them away?

Also, I am adding country ham to the soup and I cooked it for twenty minutes in the oven first- is this enough cook time since the ham will also be cooked in the water with the peas somewhat?
