phaal is a crazy brit soccer hooligan version of indian curry that is mega-times spicer than vindaloo. it's so unusual for the usa so of course i took the phaal and finally ordered it. it comes in veg, lamb, chicken and fish versions but whats the diff at this nuclear level of heat??? when you order phaal, all the indian staff come out and look at you like you are crazy, they say its not really indian and i say ok i know its british. i do not know how true that is but the staff seemed relieved and satisfied.
so i got it and it was hot. spicy beyond belief. i got the hiccups with the first bite. however, it has an interesting flavor that grows on you as you get a bit used to it. i could only eat the lamb not much of the gravy and i love spicy food. i know the routine from my vindaloo days so i got cooling sides of kulcha naan, aloo chaat (cool delish potato/yogurt/cilantro), a newcastle beer, a mango lassi and lots of water. spouse had a normal chicken saag and naan.
by the end i think i got rid of a cold i felt coming on.
try this place on the otherwise 'eh' indian curry row on 6th street in the east village. they have lots of normal and vegan pan-indian food too i cannot wait to try.
fyi--according to the takeout flyer i picked up brick lane and the area is where indian food was introduced to great britain (and i guess its the nabe where previously jack the ripper lurked). so if you like indian food and you are in london check it out.
