Hello L.A. Chowhounds! I have recently moved to the area near the Beverly Center after living in New York for five years, and I feel like I'm blind, deaf and dumb without all the accumulated restaurant and food knowledge I so carefully assembled in New York, primarily from Chowhound.
I would be eternally grateful if Angeleno Chowhounds could give me a heads up on the places to go -- I've been reading the boards avidly, and I already know that the SGV (where I grew up, incidentally) is THE place to go for a lot of Asian food, except Korean, that the Ivy is overpriced and overrated (though my husband and I accidentally ate there on our first night in town -- we drove by and it looked like it had a nice patio. The food was actually decent, albeit extraordinarily overpriced), and that Trader Joe's is a source for many many good things.
I'd really love some ideas for neighborhood places to eat or even get takeout when we don't want fancy. I'd love a local Chinese, though from a quick scan of Citysearch it's looking unlikely. I found a Vietnamese place on La Cienega that's actually pretty decent (and they deliver! A plus for this New York transplant) and Mama Voula's has great grilled octopus. Please, save me from taking the easy way out and eating at the restaurants in the Beverly Center!
