West L.A. taco trucks

The departure of the glorious truck that used to park at the Mi-T-Mart at Westgate and Santa Monica makes me really, really sad. Best flautas I have ever had, man. Christ. Crunchiest, fried-iest, chickeniest things... does anyone know where this truck went?

Anyway, the other trucks in the area, including the Juquila truck and one other Oaxacan truck right around Westgate, are all right, but no big bones.

We found a new truck, though, nearby - a Oaxacan truck that shows up at about 7 PM, on the east side of the Vons parking lot at Santa Monica near Barrington. The truck is right by Emil's Swiss Pastry.

Anyway, this truck is actually maybe a close second to the Lincoln & Rose truck for best Oaxacan taco truck. The tlayuda isn't quite as good, less balanced and more just bean-y, but the meats are pretty great.

Al pastor is pretty good, as is asada. The real winners: salty, deeply meaty, intense cabeza, and very intense chorizo.

Good atole, too. Though not as beautiful as the Lincoln/Rose truck's.
