A Weekend's Eating

Two weekends ago we had great food in Chicago ...

Thursday: Dinner at La Scarola, home of the 10 oz veal chop (which covers the plate, as advertised, topped with mozzarella and tomato, with rice);a fabulous grilled seafood appetizer, and excellent lasagne. This place has massive portions and it's totally over the top ... lots of oil and garlic, it's loud, crowded ... in other words, it's perfect.

Friday Lunch: at the Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop in Hyde Park, with a great North Carolina Style pulled pork sandwich, red beans and rice and the best deep fried oysters I've ever had.

Friday dinner at Tru: great, whimsical crazy food ... it's a bit antiseptic in there but never mind. I'll never forget the espresso encrusted venison and the lobster-lobster bisque, both of which were out of this world. The seviche was served in a glass cone suspended over a bowl in which swam a fighting fish. I appreciated the macabre humour of it all. The wine list is extensive and REALLY high end and expensive.

Saturday dinner at Zinfandel ... I had a wonderful pork loin chop and the asparagus soup was divine.
