A two week food tour of Montreal (and Ottawa)

If you are into living a healthy lifestyle then you should stop reading now…honestly I don’t know how I didn’t die of a heart attack over this two week tour but at least I would have died with a smile on my face!

Having grown up in Montreal, I can attest to its status as a culinary capital. You can have a $5 lasagna at 4am and it will be the best lasagna ever. So I am always happy to visit my hometown and visit my old favourites as well as discover some new ones. This trip I didn’t hit any of my high-end favourites so don’t be expecting “haute cuisine” just some very solid options.


I planned to have breakfast at Dejeuner Inc. but they are in the process of moving to a new location which was not open yet. A quick Google search of nearby breakfast places led me to L’Oeufirer and boy was I happy as it turned out to be the best breakfast meal that I have EVER had!

Their menu is huge (20 pages) with 12 types of breakfast poutine alone! For those unaware, this is usually eggs over potatoes with bacon all topped with hollandaise sauce. I had the Printemps Erable version with maple and it was INCREDIBLE! The flavor of the hollandaise / maple sauce was such that I never wanted the meal to end! The chocolate chip pancake was good too but did not match the poutine.

Montreal also has a claim to fame over bagels. Of course I did have Montreal bagels (including the special “apple juice” bagels sold at a local Jewish bakery) but I did not take any pics of those. I did however capture my visit to Kettleman’s in Ottawa. Open 24hrs, this place has a rep for best bagels in Ottawa. I had a garlic bagel with chopped liver spread…it was awesome!


Wings are among my favourite foods and Buffalo Bill is my favourite wing place! I love the small (bistro) wings as they cook better and the super sauciness. In addition to wings, Buffalo Bill makes awesome Philly Steaks and I had the Mexicano with jalepenos etc. (I asked them to add 911 wing sauce as well). As they say, “too chicken to cook, give us a wing”

After shooting with my fellow moderators, we hit Wild Wing, a well known chain in Ontario. I had the battered broccoli and wings with their hottest sauce while fremen had the potato skins. As usual, I left with an “average” rating.

It has been several years since my last visit to Bar-B-Barn, another Montreal institution that has been around for 50+ years. I had the combo plate with both ribs and chicken and as I expected, the ribs were the better part of the meal. Be warned though, the sauce has a sweetness to it.

Dic Ann’s is another Montreal institution although they have closed a few locations after Ann died years ago. Their claim to fame is “the world’s thinnest hamburger” so thin you can “slide them under a door”. Indeed they give you a popsicle stick to peel the hamburger off the plate. Even a double burger may not be enough so I had one of their hotdogs (cut in half and folded to make it thinner) too, Of course, you gotta get their fries with the special meat sauce.

You can’t visit Montreal without having poutine and what better place than Montreal Poutine in Old Montreal? I opted for the Italian and it was great! Often meat sauces become totally liquid by the end of the meal but not so in this case! It stayed meaty all the way through. On top of the spectacular poutine, I LOVE the atmosphere..heck they were even playing 90’s Eurodance, music that I grew up with and still listen to today!


Another local staple is smoked meat. While I did not make it to Schwartz’s, I did go to Chenoy’s for a late night meal. Funny enough, my friend and I did the same thing in 2014 (visited Chenoy’s for a second dinner lol) and we sat at the same table with the same waitor!


I let my sister choose the resto for our family dinner and she picked Souvlaki Bar...after a quick look at their website it seemed like an interesting place. Indeed, I really like the décor.

I had Spinoakopita and octopus for appetizers and pork souvlaki for was all great!

Just as good, if not better was The Greek Souvlaki House in Ottawa. Again, a discovery through Google Maps…my friend was super happy as it turns out this restaurant used to have a downtown location but closed down and then the head chef re-opened in the suburbs.

Pizza / Italian

I was in the mood for pizza and Anthony’s came up a few time in my internet searches for “best pizza in Ottawa”…it was quite good but I have had thing that really annoyed me was that the anchovies were all clustered on one side

Speaking of better pizza, how about GEMA! As I reported in my gun store tour, this is owned by the same family that owns Dante Sports gun store. I chose the VETRI with home made mortadella and pistachio! It was great!

And cheesecake for dessert

Another new discovery for me was Del Frisco’s which again came up in internet searches for best restos in the west island. I had the zucchini fries and double chicken breast in Jack Daniels sauce


Rockaberry Pies is one of my all time favourite dessert places. I had the occasion to visit them a couple of times on this trip.

My first visit was on the way to shooting with my fellow moderators in Ottawa so I grabbed a piece of strawberry shortcake before picking up a Rockabrownie to bring for Jay.

On my second visit, my friend had the same strawberry shortcake and I had the new Cabane a Sucre, which is a sugar pie topped with was INCREDIBLE!

Another favourite dessert spot of mine is Bilbouquet ice cream. I had the pistachio and bric a brac which is essentially vanilla with chunks of chocolate

I also stopped in at Ben and Jerry’s but forgot which flavours I selected lol

I am not much for coffees and when I do drink them, I prefer iced or cold variants…after my gun store tour of Dante, I was sweating quite a bit so I needed an ice coffee to cool down…luckily Café San Simeon was right across the street and it was fabulous!

Last but not least, a pistachio éclair at Premiere Moisson

So all in all, not high end but super fantastic just the same.
