Visting Boston with SO-induced restrictions

My dilemma: haven’t been to Boston in years, am very excited about visiting/eating, but am traveling with a decidedly non-chowhound SO. He has agreed to go where I choose, but refuses Chinese or Indian. His restaurant preference and experience is entirely diners, where he orders either burgers or omelettes and I’d like to broaden his horizons without scaring him away from food entirely. Money is not the deciding factor, but is definitely a concern.

We’ll be staying in Groton MA and taking the T in, so anywhere the T or public transportation goes is fair game. The one neighborhood I know we will be in is Harvard Square.

Any lunch and dinner suggestions? Good bakery or coffee places? Must-trys? Also, for dinner with the future in-laws, would anyone recommend Hammersley’s? I’ve read really mixed reviews on the boards, so am not sure if I should suggest it. Or are there any recommendations for restaurants in Groton (wherever that is)? I'd like to make a good impression!

Thanks in advance!
