Violet for dinner

A Chowhound friend and I had planned to go to W.L.A.'s newest bistro, Nook, opening night but learning that they'll have their beer and wine license in two weeks had us trying another new restaurant that has three weeks under its belt - Violet on Pico across from Trader Joe's. Smart and sophisticated with a purple motif, this is one of the best new restaurants in town. It has a small familiar menu with interesting touches that is very affordable. Started with five large green lip mussels for $8.50 that had fresh mint and cilantro and a good caesar salad for $5. Excellent scallops and a baby trout with a browned balsamic butter with a silky cauliflower puree for $16 and $12 respectively. We had just the right pinot blanc from Oregon for $31 and finished with an excellent white peach tart for $6. Service was knowing and personable. $89.31 for two. This is a neighborhood bistro worth coming to from outside the neighborhood. And we still look forward to Nook.
